Nigerians suffering from cataracts and other conditions that cause clouding of the eye’s natural lens will receive free medical screenings and surgeries courtesy of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), as part of the activities earmarked to celebrate the 80th birthday of the Presiding Bishop, Dr. Mike Okonkwo.

A statement by the Chairman of the organising committee of the BMO @80 Committee, Rev. Chinedu Nkere, said that the programme will take place at the Eye Foundation, Ikorodu, to benefit residents of Lagos and environs.

Nkere said that potential beneficiaries are expected to register at TREM International headquarters in Lagos and in all TREM branches in Lagos or fill the form online. He noted that Okonkwo, a respected religious leader and philanthropist, has dedicated his life to humanitarian efforts, and the initiative further underscores his commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

“Eligible individuals are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting the Eye Foundation Ikorodu for their screening and subsequent treatment. This initiative highlights the significance of accessible healthcare and the profound impact of charitable acts on society.

“Cataracts and similar conditions can significantly impair vision, affecting daily life and productivity, and by providing free screenings and surgical interventions, the programme aims to restore sight to many who may not have been able to afford treatment otherwise. The Eye Foundation Ikorodu, known for its expertise in eye care, will spearhead the medical procedures.”

Ekere noted that basically, cataract surgery is crucial for restoring clear vision and improving quality of life for individuals affected by cataract.

“Ophthalmologists say that it is the only and most trusted treatment for cataract, which causes clouding of the eye lenses, leading to blurry or hazy vision. Therefore, the fulcrum of cataract surgeries revolves around restoring clear vision, improving activities of daily living, reducing falls and accidents, enhancing independence, improving quality of life, reducing glare halos, improving colour’ perceptions, and monitoring; treatments of other eye care and conditions generally.

“According to statistics, cataract is a leading cause of blindness globally, disproportionately affecting low-income individuals who may lack the financial means to seek treatment. Providing free eye cataract surgeries, therefore, helps to address a significant public health issue.

“By offering these surgeries at no cost, we seek not only to restore vision and enhance the quality of life for those eligible individuals, but also to take a proactive step towards reducing the burden of preventable blindness. This compassionate approach aligns with Bishop Mike Okonkwo’s commitment to contribute towards community well-being and human development,” he noted.

Cataracts remain a leading cause of blindness globally, disproportionately affecting individuals who may lack the financial resources to seek appropriate treatment. By offering these surgeries at no cost, this initiative seeks to restore clear vision, enhance independence, and improve the overall quality of life for beneficiaries.

In addition to this healthcare programme, the 2025 Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture Series will take place on September 4, 2025, at the Civic Centre. The lecture, which will examine the theme “The Nigeria of Our Dream: Today’s Reality and a Responsible Pathfinder,” will be delivered by former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, with Major-General Ike Nwachukwu presiding as Chairman.

Another key event in the celebratory lineup is the Mike Okonkwo Football Tournament, for June 14, 2025, at the Nigerian Institute of Sports (NIS), National Stadium Complex, Surulere. The tournament, now in its 20th season, will feature 36 male teams and eight female teams, with the finals scheduled for August 30, 2025, at Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex, Lagos.
