Tomi Falase, Chairman of the Lagos State Squash Association (LSSA), on Monday described the 4th edition of the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament as a defining platform for youth development in the sport.
Falase told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that over the years, the competition had served as a vital avenue for young players to showcase their talents and gain recognition from state-level coaches.
NAN reports that the 2025 Prime Atlantic Squash Championship served off June 9 and will run until June 14 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. (NAN)
He said the tournament came shortly after Lagos delivered a commanding performance at the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
“We want to continue keeping the players active, sharpening their skills, and maintaining a high level of discipline through consistent training,” Falase said.
“We also hope more corporate organisations will support our vision by sponsoring more tournaments. That way, we can nurture players who are capable of competing at world-class level.”
Also speaking, the Technical Director, Mr Wasiu Sanni of the commended the sponsors for sustaining their support into the fourth edition of the tournament.
He said the competition had once again provided young players with the opportunity to express their talent and demonstrate their potential.
“Day One matches clearly revealed the high quality among the players. With a bit more push and experience, many of them have what it takes to compete globally,” he said.
Similarly the Yusuf Durosinlorun the Technical Director of the Nigeria Squash Federation, commended the effort of the Lagos State and the sponsor.
” Before you know it the Olympics is here by 2028 we need tournaments like this that is PSA ranked. With more exposure I believe our players will continue to thrive.
NAN reports that in the senior category, top Edo player Desmond Iguodala defeated Timilehin Oladapo of Lagos in straight sets, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, to advance to the round of 32.
Promise James also secured a 3-0 win over Peter Adeleke, with scores of 11-4, 11-9, 11-1, to book his place in the next round.
In a thrilling five-set battle, Nasiru Abdulrahman overcame Wisdom Nzei 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 2-11, 11-9 to advance as well.
In the U-19 category, Lanre Yusuf cruised past Devine Nworah with a 3-0 win (11-5, 12-10, 12-10), while Yusuf Babalola edged Richard Ejiro 12-10, 11-9, 12-10 in an exciting encounter to also move to the next stage.
Reacting to his victory, Iguodala expressed satisfaction with his performance and praised the tournament for keeping players mentally focused and competitively sharp.
“This competition is very helpful. It keeps us busy and mentally ready for bigger tournaments,” he said.
However, Devine Nworah, who lost his opening match in the U-19 category, admitted he was disappointed with his showing and needed to improve.
“It was a tough match. My opponent quickly took control and exposed my weaknesses,” he said. “But I’m not discouraged. I love the game and just need to work harder for better results.”
