The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, has emphasized that while humanitarian and development aid are crucial, they are not sufficient on their own to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Speaking during the EU Delegation’s visit to Skyline University in Kano State, Mignot noted that the EU is now focusing on leveraging private investments and resources through its Global Gateway Strategy to promote sustainable development in Nigeria’s key sectors—energy, agriculture, education, health, and digital economy.

“The EU is the largest global provider of official development aid, contributing around 42 percent of all Official Development Assistance (ODA),” he said.

Mignot called for stronger cooperation between the EU, Nigeria, and Africa at large, anchored on shared values such as respect for human rights, civil liberties, the rule of law, and democracy. He stressed that these principles are foundational to sustainable progress.

He also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, urging Nigerian youth to verify and fact-check information before sharing.

“It is important to detect and debunk disinformation. You have a responsibility to your community not just to avoid fake news, but to help correct it,” he said.

Highlighting the EU’s inclusive societal model, Mignot said, “Our Union is rooted in values—respect for human rights, rule of law, democracy, and equal opportunity. This is why we are often targeted with disinformation, especially in West Africa.”

He added that the EU seeks a balanced, mutually beneficial partnership with Nigeria—moving away from a donor-recipient model to one based on investment and shared prosperity.

“What we want is a partnership based on mutual interests. ODA alone cannot achieve the SDGs. Investments are essential,” he stressed.

The Registrar of Skyline University, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed Abdullahi, described the EU visit and lecture titled “The European Union, a Reliable Partner of Nigeria and the World” as significant. He said it reaffirmed the importance of global cooperation and meaningful dialogue in tackling shared challenges.

The event featured a lecture by Ambassador Mignot, who also engaged with students from Skyline University and other Kano-based institutions. The session provided insight into the EU’s work in Nigeria and ECOWAS, and highlighted educational opportunities, including postgraduate scholarships in Europe.
