One Nigerian brand is quietly making a bold statement in an industry known for rapid shifts and global influences. Sly Monay, founded by Lagos-born designer and entrepreneur Sulaimon Ayoola Monayajo, is carving a space for African-inspired fashion that speaks to both tradition and the future.
Sly Monay blends local heritage with clean, modern design. From reworked agbadas to structured kaftans, the brand offers pieces that appeal to a new generation of Africans at home and abroad. “My goal has always been to make clothes that reflect who we are, with the confidence of global style,” says Monayajo.
With over 13 years of experience running the brand, Monayajo has watched the Nigerian fashion industry grow. Designers are focusing more on wearability and sustainability, a shift that plays to Sly Monay’s strengths. The brand is preparing to launch a new line that uses eco-friendly fabrics and production methods. This move mirrors a growing trend in Nigeria’s fashion scene, where more designers are paying attention to ethical sourcing and reducing waste.
What sets Sly Monay apart is both its designs and its business model. Monayajo holds an MBA from Cardiff University and has a background in accounting and economics. His business sense allows him to scale creative ideas and position his brand for both local and international markets.
“My fashion pieces are more than clothes. They are tools of identity,” Monayajo explains. “When people wear Sly Monay, they feel seen, they feel powerful.”
The brand already has strong appeal among fashion lovers in the UK, US and Canada. With upcoming launches planned for those regions, Sly Monay is on track to become a household name among Africans in the diaspora. Back home, the designer is also investing in young talent. He trains upcoming designers and supports local artisans.
With the rise of Afro-beats, Detty December Nigerian fashion has also been brought to global attention. From Lagos Fashion Week to AMVCAs to online stores showcasing Nigerian brands to the world, there’s a hunger for original African fashion. Sly Monay fits right into that picture, but with its own signature.
“We don’t just design. We’re building a culture that travels,” says Monayajo.
As the fashion world continues to open up to new voices, Sly Monay is not just following the trend. It is pushing it forward with pride, purpose and precision.
