The May-Six Foundation has given financial reward to best students in mathematics through the May-Six National Mathematics Competition, held between Monday, April 28 and Friday, May 23, 2025.
Olabiyi Oluwaferanmi,a student of Agbowa Community Senior Grammar School,Epe, Lagos emerged the winner of the first edition of the May Six Foundation Mathematics Competition.
The 15-year-old Olabiyi won the competition scoring a total of 164 points and went home smiling with a whooping sum of #1.5m and a laptop.
Anyinam Chimkwesiri of Penny International School, Coker, Aguda, Lagos, who scored a total of 160 points and went home with #1m and a tablet while Jonah Oyedikachi of Dabitos Schools, Mushin, Lagos came third with 140 points and went home with a sum of #500,000.
In addition, the best student from each local government got rewarded with ₦200,000, and the best student from each school (Preliminary Stage) got ₦10,000.
The co- founder of the foundation and organisers of the event, Dr. Olukayode Shiroye said the competition is to re-ignite the students to pay more attention to mathematics, having been a winner of one of such competitions in the past.
The competition he also said is to push schools to start using computers to do exams and curb malpractices through the use of a software installed in computers used for the competition.
Although the maiden edition was held in Lagos,the organisers hope to make it a national competition.
Mrs. Debbie Shiroye, also a co-founder of the foundation stated that the organisation’s focus is to empower parents, and students that are struggling.
“We want to reduce the number of out-of-school children because in the world where we are if you don’t have educated people around us, a lot of things would go wrong. If you are educated, I am educated, everyone is educated, the life we live here would be better,” she noted.
Speaking with the winner of the competition, the highly elated Olabiyi said that all of his hard work from when he was young had finally paid off.
Olabiyi who had represented Lagos state in different mathematics competition said he is grateful to his teacher also his father who is also a mathematics teacher.
The May-Six Foundation competition strated on Monday, April 28 2025, with Mock Examination.
This is a practice examination for interested schools and participants to familiarise themselves with the computer-based environment and question format.
The First Stage of the Examination was held on Friday, May 2, 2025 with three (3) students from each participating school competing, and the best student from each school qualifies for the next stage.
Local Government Level Competition was on May 9, 2025. Here, the best student from each school competes for the top position in their local government.
The Grand Finale was held on Friday, May 23, 2025. Where the best 20 students across the state competed in the final showdown at May-Six Foundation Headquarters,Opebi Road, Ikeja, Lagos.
