No fewer than 40 people with disabilities (PWDs) have been empowered through various skills acquisition programs in Oyo State.

The three-day Social Inclusion Skills Training, titled Women Inspired for Growth Through Skills (40 WINGS), was held at the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo. Oluwakemi Odudanya, founder of Eagle Voice International for Disability Rights, emphasized the importance of skills training in promoting inclusion for PWDs.

Odudanya noted that equipping persons with disabilities with practical skills enhances their self-reliance and encourages greater societal acceptance. She highlighted that stigma often limits opportunities for PWDs, stressing the need to change perceptions through education and empowerment.

As a visually impaired person herself, Odudanya pointed out that shared experiences and support networks significantly boost the capabilities of individuals within the disability community.

“Empowerment through skills acquisition is not just about learning; it’s about transforming lives and breaking barriers,” she said. “We must work together to create an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of their abilities.”

She encouraged participants to make the most of the skills acquired and to continuously seek growth and development opportunities.

Participants expressed gratitude for the program, highlighting how it will improve their livelihoods and foster greater independence.

“Through this training, we are not only gaining skills but also building confidence,” one participant said.

“This opportunity has opened our eyes to what we can achieve, and we are determined to make a difference in our communities,” another added.

“I am grateful for this program. It has given us the tools to secure better livelihoods and showcase our potential to society,” a third participant remarked.
