IBADAN — The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has underscored the importance of transparency as a key tool in combating corruption and improving operational efficiency across the Service.
He made this known during a visit to the Oyo/Osun Area Command in Ibadan, where he assessed the command’s activities and addressed operational challenges.
Adeniyi emphasized that transparency fosters accountability and strengthens both internal and public trust.
“When we operate transparently, we create an environment where accountability thrives. This not only boosts morale among officers but also enhances public confidence in our operations,” he said.
He decried the corrosive impact of corruption on the Service’s core mandate, describing it as a major obstacle to progress.
“Every act of corruption is a setback for our mission. It erodes the trust of the citizens we serve and distracts us from our core responsibilities,” he stated.
The CGC advocated for a collective commitment to integrity, urging officers to be proactive and vigilant.
“To combat corruption, we must implement rigorous checks and balances. We should also promote whistleblowing and ensure the protection of those who report misconduct.”
Adeniyi further highlighted the strategic importance of the Customs Service beyond revenue generation.
“Our role goes beyond collecting revenue. We are facilitators of trade and custodians of national security,” he added. “By prioritising transparency, we can streamline operations, reduce bottlenecks, and improve service delivery.”
He encouraged all officers to uphold the values of honesty and openness, saying:
“Let us commit to a culture of integrity. Together, we can build a Customs Service that is not only efficient but also respected by the public.”
Earlier, the Customs Area Controller for the Oyo/Osun Command, Controller Joseph Adelaja, welcomed the CGC’s visit and praised his strong advocacy for transparency and accountability.
“Your emphasis on transparency resonates deeply with us. It is imperative that we create an environment where every officer feels empowered to act with integrity,” Adelaja said.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by the command, particularly the effects of corruption, and called for unified action.
“Corruption hinders our efficiency and damages our reputation. We must work together to eliminate any practices that compromise our core values.”
Adelaja expressed appreciation for the CGC’s leadership and visit, stating:
“Your presence here reinforces our shared commitment to the ideals of the Nigeria Customs Service and motivates us to uphold them.”
