Ukhomunyio Community rejects interim committee, calls for unity

By Nnasom David

The Ukhomunyio Community has issued a public statement distancing itself from a group identified as the “Ukhomunyio Community Interim Committee,” stating that the group does not have the endorsement of the broader community.

In a communiqué dated May 17, 2025, the leadership affirmed that a general meeting of community members—including village heads, youth representatives, women, and other stakeholders—was held on May 11, 2025, during which it was resolved that all interim committees be dissolved. The community expressed its commitment to moving forward under a single, unified leadership structure.

The statement, signed by National President Samuel Sunday Oneshiogbe Afemikhe, High Chief Julius Ederefo (representing the Council of Village Heads), and Comrade Merry Omoalu, President of the Ukhomunyio Youth Association, called for peace and collective cooperation in the interest of development and harmony.

The Ukhomunyio Community, with a history spanning over two centuries, noted that it has operated under an organized leadership structure for more than fifty years. This structure, it said, is responsible for fostering unity, peace, and socio-economic progress among its members across the three kindreds of Ukhomunyio.

The statement also raised concerns regarding the emergence of Mr. Michael Sado as Okuokpellagbe of Okpella. Community leaders stated that, in their view, the process did not align with the procedural expectations outlined in the Bendel State Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979. Among the issues raised were the absence of a broad-based nomination process, lack of consensus among traditional leaders, and limited community consultation.

The leadership further advised the public to seek proper clarification before engaging with any committee or individuals not recognized by the broader Ukhomunyio body. They reiterated their commitment to legal and peaceful resolution of any disputes, and emphasized the importance of respecting established procedures and unity within the community.
