— Say He’s a Symbol of Patriotism

Former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu possesses the capacity to restructure Nigeria and entrench true federalism.
Daniel praised President Tinubu’s bold reforms, including electoral reforms, judicial independence, and devolution of powers. He cited the recent Regional Development Commissions inaugurated by Tinubu as strategic steps toward restructuring Nigeria and fostering federalism.
Speaking at the 99th Birthday Lecture in honour of Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Daniel stated that the commissions would drive tailored development across the regions and address long-standing demands for power devolution, particularly in the southern states.
Daniel’s lecture, titled “A Strong United Yoruba Race as Panacea for Reviving Vanishing Yoruba Values and Culture,” highlighted that while the call for restructuring has faced resistance due to misconceptions, it remains crucial for national unity and sustainable development.
“Restructuring Nigeria in a way that earns the buy-in of all may not be as fast as some desire, but the benefits will come, fostering unity and cohesion,” Daniel stated.
He urged Afenifere to collaborate with like-minded socio-political groups to build consensus and translate shared aspirations into political realities.
Former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, echoed the call for a truly federal structure that empowers sub-national units to harness their resources and develop at their own pace.
Mimiko described federalism as a “win-win” for all regions, emphasizing that the Yoruba’s cultural and political homogeneity positions the Southwest to lead in development and value preservation.
“God has endowed every region with resources. With restructuring, competition among sub-nationals will lead to rapid development,” he noted.
He also raised concerns over increasing security threats in the Southwest, stressing the need for urgent intervention from the region’s governors.
“Our physical environment is under assault — kidnappings, land grabs, killings — these must be addressed urgently,” he warned.
Mimiko further called for a return to the progressive ideals of Awoism, which he described as the Yoruba’s default political ideology, urging leaders to prioritize massive investment in human capital development, especially in education and health.
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, described Pa Reuben Fasoranti as a “rare symbol of patriotism, courage, and integrity.” He lauded Fasoranti’s selfless service as a guiding light for generations of Nigerians.
“What we are celebrating here today is not just the number. It is not just the years in the life of an icon and one of the brightest lights of our country, but the life in the years and journey of an elder statesman and an exemplary personality who has exemplified service, courage, conviction, and devotion to humanity throughout his life,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He added that it was fitting to celebrate Fasoranti’s 99th birthday with a public lecture, given his long-standing contributions to education, culture, and leadership in Nigeria.
Reflecting on the theme of the lecture — “Wanted: A Strong and United Yoruba Race as Panacea for Reviving the Vanishing Yoruba Values and Culture” — Aiyedatiwa described it as both timely and deeply thought-provoking.
He emphasized the need to preserve Yoruba heritage, warning against the decline of cultural values and calling for cultural education to promote Yoruba history, traditions, and values among the youth.
“We must recognize the significance of our traditions, customs, and values in shaping our identity. As a people, we cannot afford to deviate from this noble trajectory,” Aiyedatiwa concluded.
In his welcome address, Mr. Yinka Akinola, Chairman of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA), Ondo State Branch, described Chief Fasoranti as an alumnus worth celebrating, noting his embodiment of academic excellence, moral strength, and selfless service to society.
The Chief Host of the event, Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, praised Fasoranti for standing firm against external influences that threatened to erode Yoruba values.
Similarly, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, represented by the Registrar, Mr. G.O. Saliu, commended Fasoranti for his far-reaching contributions to cultural and political advancement.
The Chairman of the event, Prof. Williams Olu Aderounmu, noted Fasoranti’s unwavering commitment to principled leadership and community development, suggesting he deserves a Yoruba global award for his dedication.
The Olowo of Owo and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, acknowledged Pa Fasoranti’s long-standing relationship with the people of Owo, particularly during his tenure as Commissioner for Finance under the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin.
Oba Ogunoye praised Fasoranti for his efforts in preserving Yoruba identity and urged others to emulate his legacy.
