Kaduna – The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) has reiterated its support for the establishment of State Police and called on the National Assembly (NASS) to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its implementation.
The Forum, during its joint meeting with the Chairmen of the Northern States Traditional Rulers Council in Kaduna on Saturday, resolved to collaborate with the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) to devise strategies for increasing support to Federal Security Forces. It also agreed to bolster local security initiatives aimed at combating all forms of insecurity within the region.
These resolutions were part of a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, chaired by the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who also serves as the NSGF Chairman.
While reading the communiqué, Governor Yahaya commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent commitment to tackling security challenges and addressing infrastructural deficits in Northern Nigeria.
The Forum reiterated its unwavering support for the creation of State Police and urged the National Assembly to expedite the enactment of the necessary legal framework to make it operational.
NSGF resolved to liaise with the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) to develop modalities for enhancing support to federal security agencies, ensuring better coordination and resource deployment.
The Forum emphasized the need to strengthen unique local security strategies that have proven effective in combating insecurity in various states.
Plans were outlined to set up inter-state platforms for improved surveillance and intelligence sharing along joint borders to curb cross-border crimes and insurgency.
The Forum scheduled its next meeting for August 30, 2025, to review progress and further deliberations on regional development and security.
The meeting, held at the Council Chamber of Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, was attended by the Governors of all 19 Northern States and the Chairmen of the 19 Northern States Traditional Rulers’ Councils.
The NSGF expressed optimism that these collective measures would contribute significantly to stabilizing the region and advancing socio-economic development.
