The Paramount Ruler of Odo Ayandelu Kingdom, Oba Aderibigbe Asunmo, has said certain monarchs are discrediting the reputation of the Yoruba kingship institution.
Oba Asunmo made this statement on Saturday during the celebration of his 15th coronation anniversary and the conferment of chieftaincy titles on chiefs in Odo Ayandelu, Lagos State.
The king noted that being a king in Yorubaland is a position of great significance.
He stated that it was unfortunate that some people have begun to ridicule the institution of kingship.
The Oba said, “There is no justification for a king to be pursuing government contracts or working in an office, only to have his photo taken while he is asleep. It is unbecoming for a king to dance in front of a musician at a party.
“It is disgraceful for a king to be involved in fraudulent activities or to marry women abroad with the intention of exploiting them financially. These are some of the reasons why kings are increasingly losing the respect of the people.
“Some Obas seem to have forgotten how they became kings, through traditional rituals. Once they ascend the throne, they abandon these rituals and break long-standing traditions. Being a Muslim or a Christian should not mean abandoning one’s cultural heritage. A king who forgets his traditions and rituals loses his traditional authority, as he can no longer commune with the deities. It is highly inappropriate for kings to go to churches and roll on the floor.”
Oba Asunmo advised the kings to change their acts as these actions were unbecoming of royalty.
Stating his achievements, he said, “Since his installation as king, my community has witnessed significant development. During my reign, we have seen the establishment of schools, housing estates, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp, and many other achievements. I give thanks to Almighty God, my family, and my community for their unwavering support.”
