Abuja – The Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked attack” on operatives of its Intelligence Response Team (IRT) on Monday, May 20, 2025, at Okhuimwun Community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, Edo State.

In an official statement, the Force Headquarters said the officers, who are part of the Force Intelligence Department – Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), were traveling from Lagos through Edo when they encountered a mob near the University of Benin (UNIBEN) axis that had barricaded the road.

“The mob, in an unlawful display of aggression, attacked the officers with stones, sticks, and other dangerous objects, inflicting serious injuries on two personnel,” the statement read.

The Police commended the officers for maintaining restraint by not retaliating with force, even under life-threatening circumstances. The injured operatives are said to be receiving medical care and are in stable condition.

The Force warned against acts of violence and lawlessness directed at its personnel, emphasizing that investigations have commenced and that all those found culpable will face legal consequences.

In a separate development, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has ordered a full-scale investigation into a tragic incident in Oyo State, where a 14-year-old boy, Kehinde Alade, lost his life following an altercation involving personnel of the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).

The IGP condemned the incident in strong terms, confirming that the officer involved in the shooting has been taken into custody, and assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation is underway.

“The findings of the investigation will be made public to ensure justice is served,” the IGP stated, extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to remain law-abiding and to channel grievances through lawful and peaceful means.
