UYO – HOST Governor Umo Eno has urged participants to “compete clean” in the quest for athletics greatness as the grand finale of the MTN Champs Season 3 opens in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
The governor, represented by FIFA Instructor and Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Sports, Paul Bassey, gave the advice Tuesday shortly before declaring open the competition at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
He said, “It’s a delight we’re hosting this competition here. In Akwa Ibom state, sports occupies a prominent place. We have been given a mandate to go to the grassroots and schools to develop and nurture talents.
“We’re indeed very grateful for what MTN has done. We pray others will emulate their example, because government cannot do it alone. We have depleted champions in track and field. That is why this competition is dear to our hearts.
“In the next 5 or 6 years, we will be able to tell the story that in Uyo, in 2025, that young man, that young lady, was discovered. That will be our pride. I urge all of you, especially the athletes to compete clean. As you jump and throw, let even the sky not be your limit.”
Ibe Etea, General Manager, Internal Audit and Forensic Services, MTN Nigeria, said the Champs journey which began three years ago with a clear vision to discover, develop, and celebrate next generation of Nigerian athletics champions has been inspiring so far.
“We believe in giving young Nigerians the platform to shine, not just on local fields, but on global stages. MTN Champs is more than a competition; it’s a movement, a pipeline, a promise. To our athletes, you are all champions, no matter the results.”
The opening day features events including 400Meters race for boys and girls, across junior and senior categories as well as high jump among other events.
