The Nigerian movie industry is currently facing a potential brain drain as some of its stars are leaving to pursue new careers in the US military. Late last year, Princess Chineke made headlines after she took the oath to serve in the U.S. military. The actress who was a former Miss UNIBEN expressed her passion for serving in the US Army. She was followed by Mayowa Dosu and now Grace Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, who joined the United States Navy as a Sailor.
A former beauty queen and actress who joined the US Army in 2024, Princess Chineke expressed her gratitude to her adopted country, saying, “I love the prestige that comes with the American military. As a citizen of this great country that has done so much for me, I feel it’s my turn to give back. God bless America.”
Also, Mayowa Dosu, an actress and producer recently joined the US Army. She announced her enlistment on Instagram, stating, “I am an American Soldier, I am a warrior and a member of a team, I serve the people of the United States and live the army values.”
The latest to join the move, is Grace Bassey, a prominent actress, who joined the US Navy and earned her US citizenship after completing boot camp. She dedicated her achievement to her late father, Naval Commander Asido Bassey Effah, and expressed her gratitude, saying, “Nigeria raised me. America challenged me. I stand today stronger and more determined than ever.”
These actresses have cited various reasons for joining the US military, including a desire to serve their adopted country and seek new challenges. However, their departure may pose a challenge to the Nollywood industry, which has been a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economy and cultural identity.
