Group calls for robust public institutionalisation of data management in Nigeria

The Institute of Information Management (IIM) has called for the robust public institutionalisation of data management in Nigeria to secure both business and public data and to guard against data security breaches.

This motion was raised by the International President of IIM and Country Chief Data Ambassador, Mr. Ayodeji Oyedokun, at the IIM International Convention held in Lagos over the weekend.

In his address, Oyedokun stated that with the increased utilisation of cyberspace for public, business, and private engagements, institutionalising data management would strengthen data security within the country by creating strong systems for companies and organisations to thrive.

However, he noted that a lack of awareness regarding the critical role of data management has left many businesses and institutions vulnerable, resulting in the breakdown of personal and organisational reputations, financial losses due to data security breaches, and acts of sabotage.

According to him, “Many organisations that have seen the value in taking their business online should also see it as a responsibility to ensure their domains are safe and that they protect the data they generate, as well as their daily activities. There is no better way to do this than by acquiring adequate knowledge about the dos and don’ts of setting up and using systems.

“Cybersecurity is not just about us alone. It is about our customers and those who patronise us. It concerns people within our networks. If our networks are porous and we allow hackers and other bad actors to wreak havoc or gain unnecessary access, it won’t only affect us, it will damage our reputation and harm all stakeholders connected to us. That is why we continue to advocate for the institutionalisation of data management.”

Meanwhile, the Secretary of the IIM International Convention Committee, Mr. Adeniyi Jaiye, noted that, like every emerging market, Nigeria is on a journey, and that targeted investments in data management will yield long-term benefits.

“Everything is a journey, and I believe Nigeria has already started that journey, especially when you consider developments in data protection. There is also a need for greater awareness so we can localise existing laws,” Jaiye said.
