IYC
The Secretary-General of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Maobuye Nangi Obu, has expressed disappointment over recent remarks by the council’s president, Jonathan Lokpobiri, concerning the political situation in Rivers State.
Lokpobiri had suggested at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) in Port Harcourt that greater commitment from the Ijaw people could have helped prevent the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. According to him, a more constructive approach to resolving the crisis, rather than inflammatory rhetoric, was needed.
In a statement issued yesterday, Obu disagreed with Lokpobiri’s comments, describing them as misrepresentative of the Ijaw people’s efforts toward peace. He urged Lokpobiri to clarify his position on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, noting the need for strong and transparent leadership within the IYC.
Obu emphasised the role of respected Ijaw leaders and the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) in advocating for a peaceful resolution to the situation, and expressed concern that these efforts have not received adequate recognition.
He further called on Lokpobiri to maintain a consistent stance on issues affecting the Ijaw people, especially in the face of rising political tensions. Obu stressed the importance of using such platforms as the PINL meeting to spotlight the community’s pressing challenges rather than engage in rhetoric that could be perceived as divisive.
Addressing political developments in Bayelsa State, Obu cautioned against actions that could escalate tensions and reiterated the need for responsible leadership. He also reaffirmed the Ijaw nation’s commitment to peace and unity, noting that constructive dialogue remains the best path forward.
“The Ijaw people are peace-loving and committed to resolving disputes through dialogue,” he stated. “What we need at this moment is leadership that reflects these values and stands firm in the face of challenges.”
Obu concluded by calling for unity and a reaffirmation of the IYC’s core mission of advocating for the rights and aspirations of the Ijaw people.
