The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ondo State Chapter, Very Rev. Fr. Anselm Olorunfemi Ologunwa, has expressed concern over the rising wave of insecurity and moral decline in the country, saying it has instilled fear in the hearts of many Nigerians.

Ologunwa, in his Easter message issued in Akure and signed by the association’s Director of Information and Communications, Daisi Ajayi, listed the challenges confronting the country to include persecution, religious conflicts, attacks, and rampant kidnapping.

He lamented that the harsh economic conditions in Nigeria have affected the church significantly, noting that it has become increasingly difficult for Christians to practice generosity, support missionary work, or maintain strong faith.

“Moral values are declining daily, while respect for culture is gradually being eroded as people struggle to keep their faith in the face of rising secular ideologies and lifestyles,” Ologunwa said.

He stressed that the essence of Easter is a reminder that true faith is rooted in a deep, personal relationship with God rather than in external appearances or rituals.

“Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was about redeeming humanity from sin—not about dehumanizing or oppressing others. It teaches us the true meaning of sacrifice and love.”

Ologunwa urged the government at all levels to prioritize citizens’ welfare, promote human dignity, and implement comprehensive economic development policies that encourage inclusive growth and job creation. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to reduce dependency on volatile commodities and invest in sustainable sectors.

He also called on Nigerian leaders to govern with integrity, justice, fairness, and compassion, noting that with unity, youth engagement, strategic evangelism, and community involvement, the country can overcome its many challenges.

PDP, APC Extend Easter Messages

In a separate message, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State also addressed the challenges facing Nigerians. In a statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, the party lamented what it called the “excruciating pains, anguish, and devastation” caused by what it described as the “criminal neglect and irresponsiveness” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We urge both the state and federal governments to emulate Christ’s example by putting the needs of the people above self-interest,” the PDP stated.

The party expressed hope in the resurrection message of Easter, promising to work toward restoring good governance in the state.

“We draw strength from the love of Christ and are committed to restoring purposeful leadership in Ondo State.”

The PDP urged Christians to reflect on Christ’s virtues—love, sacrifice, empathy, and perseverance—and embody them in their daily lives to foster a safer and more secure society.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ondo State Chapter, also shared its Easter message, calling on Christians to live in accordance with the virtues of Christ.

In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaye, on behalf of the State Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, the APC reiterated its commitment to equitable development across the state.

“The current budget reflects our commitment to inclusive development. With unity and peace, we can achieve great things together,” the statement read.

Adetimehin thanked Christian leaders for their continued support and urged them to keep partnering with the government to ensure progress. He also encouraged leaders and citizens alike to extend kindness and charity to the less privileged.

“We wish all Christians a peaceful and joyous Easter celebration,” the party concluded.
