ABAKALIKI – Over 120 traditional rulers in Ebonyi State have benefited from a free eye screening, surgery, and eyeglasses scheme organized by Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru, wife of the governor of Ebonyi State.

The program, held in partnership with the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA) and the governor’s pet project, the Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO), provided free eye care to the traditional rulers from the 13 local government areas of the state. The traditional rulers turned out in large numbers for the event, receiving comprehensive eye care free of charge.

While flagging off the initiative at the Women Development Center, Abakaliki, Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru emphasized the importance of traditional rulers as key stakeholders in policy-making, noting that their health should be a priority.

“Today marks another milestone in our commitment to advancing the well-being of our people, especially those whose wisdom, leadership, and cultural values serve as the foundation of our communities—our respected royal fathers,” she said.

She further explained, “Our eyes are not just organs; they are windows to the world. They allow us to experience the beauty around us and connect with one another. Unfortunately, many in our communities suffer from preventable eye conditions that hinder their ability to see clearly. This initiative aims to address these challenges directly.”

Mrs. Nwifuru stressed that eye health is critical not only for personal well-being but also for community development. “When our leaders can see clearly, they can make informed decisions that benefit their people. By providing comprehensive eye screenings, surgeries, and prescription eyeglasses, we are investing in the future of Ebonyi State.”

She concluded, “It is essential that those who lead our communities should have their vision restored and preserved. Health is wealth, and when our leaders are healthy, our communities become stronger, more united, and more peaceful.”

Dr. Divine Igwe, Executive Secretary of EBSHIA, commended the governor’s wife for her generous initiative, stating that the agency has already registered about 90,000 people under its insurance scheme. He added that just two weeks ago, the agency had screened approximately 200 individuals who were slated for eye surgeries as part of the program.

Traditional rulers who benefited from the initiative expressed their gratitude. Eze Boniface Aloh Nwokocha, the traditional ruler of Amachi community, and Eze Sunday Oketa, the traditional ruler of Nkaliki Achara Unuhu autonomous community, both thanked Mrs. Nwifuru for the free eye treatment.
