The Lagos State Government has announced plans to adopt cutting-edge technology to enhance maritime efficiency and explore new trade routes aimed at expanding the state’s economic reach.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this during the 27th edition of the Maritime Industry Merit Awards (MIMA), held in Lagos, where he was honored as the most outstanding governor in maritime infrastructure development.

The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, received the award alongside other key stakeholders honoured for their outstanding contribution to the Nigerian maritime sector.

According to Sanwolu, maritime infrastructure remains central to Lagos’ economic growth strategy and a vital link to regional and global trade.

He said: “In Lagos, we understand that maritime infrastructure is the backbone of our economic growth and a vital link to regional and global trade. Our strategic post lines and ports are not just physical assets, they are gateways to endless opportunities. We have committed ourselves to developing them to meet the highest global standards.”

Speaking on the award, Sanwo-Olu expressed deep appreciation to the organizers for the honor, attributing the achievement to the dedication of his team and the support of the people of Lagos. “From the successful delivery of the Lekki Free Zone Port to the upgrading of port access roads and the revitalization of clean waterways, our projects have boosted efficiency, eased congestion, and created thousands of job opportunities,” Sanwo-Olu noted.

He attributed the progress made by his administration to effective collaboration with federal agencies, the private sector, and maritime professionals.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring that maritime development aligns with environmental preservation and social progress.

“Our vision is to position Lagos not only as a maritime hub but also as a great place to live and a beacon of excellence across Africa,” he said.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of MIMA,Prince Olayiwola Shittu, stated that MIMA is more than a platform for recognition but about celebrating resilience, innovation, and the impact distinguished maritime stakeholders have made, which takes the nation closer to actualizing the much-anticipated transformation of the Marine and Blue economy.

He said: “Tonight is about celebrating how far we’ve come as individuals, organisations, unions, and associations. As we celebrate and reward excellence, we are also looking ahead to stimulate more innovative, accountable, and patriotic leadership traits for a sustainable maritime sector.

“This year’s event, themed: “Rewards of Excellence”, is an acknowledgment and a celebration of exceptional performance, achievements and contributions of diverse stakeholders in the nation’s maritime sector. It is our belief that these awards will be an extra motivation to awardees and other industry players to strive for even greater achievements.”

Shittu believes that the awards present an opportunity for deeper collaboration, networking, and fostering of patriotic leadership within the industry.

The event also brought together key industry players including shipping companies, terminal operators, freight forwarders, regulators, and seafarers.
