The Kwara State Government on Thursday signed an agreement to upgrade the Omu Aran General Hospital into a teaching hospital for the medical students of Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), located in Oko, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.

The move, aimed at producing more quality healthcare workers, particularly medical officers and specialists, is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen its collaboration with private institutions in healthcare delivery.

Last year, the state government also signed a similar Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Al-Hikmah University to make the newly upgraded Sobi Specialist Hospital in Ilorin a teaching hospital as part of the accreditation process for the university’s medical courses.

The MOU signing ceremony attracted a wide range of dignitaries, including senior government officials, traditional rulers, top academics, and other stakeholders in the sector.

In her keynote address, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam praised the initiative as another milestone achievement of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration to strengthen the state’s health system. She highlighted the Governor’s dynamic leadership, mentioning his recent recruitment of 1,005 health workers and the creation of a state teaching hospital.

She also emphasized the importance of collaboration with the private sector to ensure the success of such large-scale healthcare initiatives, stating, “It takes a forward-thinking, visionary, and dynamic personality like Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to know the limit and seek the collaboration and support of the private sector.”

On behalf of Kwara Southerners, Oba Ismaila Yahya Alebiosu commended the Governor for his contributions to the region, highlighting the Osi campus of Kwara State University and ongoing road projects. He acknowledged the historic nature of the agreement, noting that it was the first of its kind in the region.

Oba Raheem Oladele Olaoti also expressed appreciation, stating that the project would significantly improve healthcare delivery in Kwara South, bringing life and hope to the region.

Dr. Thomas Adewumi, Founder and Chancellor of TAU, praised Governor AbdulRazaq for his positive impact on the people of Kwara State, particularly Kwara South, and for his commitment to fairness and development. He noted that the Governor’s contributions were a landmark achievement that would leave a lasting legacy.

Dr. Adewumi expressed gratitude for the Governor’s continued efforts to improve the lives of people in Kwara State, especially in the healthcare sector. He concluded, “We have never had it so good since 1967. I pray that God gives him a long life and continues to use him for greater accomplishments.”
