The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), in collaboration with Digital Dreams ICT Academy, has successfully hosted the maiden edition of the DEV-WAR coding competition, a platform designed to bridge the gap between theoretical academic knowledge and practical tech industry needs.

Held on February 28, 2025, at the university’s ICT room, the intense competition featured nine students from the Computer Science Department who tackled real-world coding challenges designed to test their problem-solving, innovation, and analytical thinking skills. After several hours of fierce but friendly rivalry, three students emerged victorious: Nwankwo Chidera Michael** (1st), Victor Uchenna Jonah** (2nd), and Nnamchi Kizito Chinecherem (3rd).

The winners were celebrated on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at an official award ceremony and courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Aloysius Okolie.

Speaking at the event, Engr. Chukwudi Edoga, CEO of Digital Dreams ICT Academy, highlighted the importance of equipping students with digital skills early in their academic journey.

> “I have always preached that there should be a synergy between industry and academia. It’s this synergy that we’ve begun with this coding competition, and we plan to make it an annual event to stimulate students’ interest in coding,” Engr. Edoga said.

He stressed that coding is not limited to computer science students alone and that employers now value demonstrable skills more than just certificates.

“Employers no longer focus solely on certificates but on the value and skills an individual can bring,” he added. “It’s important for the industry to merge with academia to produce more job-ready graduates.”

In his remarks, Prof. Okolie, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, lauded both Digital Dreams and the Computer Science Department for fostering innovation and practical learning. He revealed that the university is working towards launching an Innovation Hub by the end of April 2025.

“The goal is to enhance our certification program so that by the time our students reach their third year, they are already taking care of their bills,” he said. “We want to produce students and staff who are not only employable but also creators of value.”

He commended the winners and encouraged them to continue honing their skills and using technology to drive positive change in society.

“I’m proud of what you’ve achieved,” the Vice Chancellor said. “This is just the beginning. Keep innovating. We will support you and sponsor your future innovations.”

Also present at the event were Prof. Chike Anibeze, Director of Academic Planning; Dr. Ekene Ozioko, Head of the Computer Science Department; Dr. Uche Okafor, Director of ICT; and other university staff who came to celebrate the achievements of the students.

The ceremony concluded with a prize presentation by the Vice Chancellor, with each of the three winners receiving cash prizes in recognition of their performance and innovation.
