NUC accredits 24 courses for British University in Nigeria

…As Gov. Otti Reiterates Commitment To Education

The Vice Councilor of Nigeria British University, NBU, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi said that the Nigeria University Commission, NUC, has accredited 23 courses for the University.

Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi who spoke at the university’s 2nd matriculation ceremony held at Asa-Abia, a boundary community with Rivers State said that with the successful Resource verification of additional 8 courses, the number of courses accredited for the university have increased to 24.

Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi said that 16 take off courses were accredited when the university took off last year, saying that out of the 24 courses only 23 have admitted students.

He said that with the 23  courses in place , enrollment with Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB and engagement of requisite staff, the university is committed to the  enthronement of highest academic exercise.

He said that the occasion marks its noble intention to formally admit 162 fresh students into the  23 available programmes in five Faculties, approved for NBU by the NUC.

“With the successful Resource Verification of additional 8 degree programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in June last year, added to our original 16 take-off degree programmes, further enrolment with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the engagement of requisite staff committed to the enthronement of highest academic and moral standards, NBU continued academic activities in its 2024/2025 academic session.

“This occasion marks our noble intention to formally admit 162 fresh men into these 23 available programmes in five Faculties, approved for NBU by the NUC. The Faculties and their number of students being matriculated today are: Law – 30; Management & Social Sciences – 17; Computing & Information Technology – 36; Basic Medical & Allied Health Sciences housed in our College of Health Sciences – 69; and Engineering & Applied Sciences – 10.

“To our second batch of students, you are expected to take advantage of being here to foster life-long friendships as proud Alumni of NBU. I enjoin you to be law-abiding as the Nigerian British University has zero tolerance for cultism, examination misconduct, unruly behaviour, drug addiction and other forms of anti-social vices, because at the end, the certificate issued will be based on character and learning, with character preceding learning.

“I admonish you to use the internet wisely, desist from the inordinate use of social media, as the University strives to provide essential municipal services, ICT infrastructure and recreational facilities that will motivate you to perform optimally and give you an exquisite learning experience.

“As you begin this transformative journey, embrace every challenge as an opportunity to grow. Work hard, stay disciplined, and take advantage of the resources and mentorship available to you. Your time here will shape your future, and I have no doubt that you will rise to the occasion”.

He urged the new students to imbibe the culture of collaboration, mutual respect and continuous learning saying that success in any spheres of human endeavour comes only through diligent hard work. .

Meanwhile, the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to advancing education and driving sustainable development in the state.

Speaking at the second Matriculation Ceremony of the Nigerian British University (NBU) in Asa, Abia State, Saturday, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Uche, underscored the government’s dedication to providing quality education for all.

Governor Otti while highlighting the government’s investment in education, revealed that 20% of the state’s ₦700 billion annual budget has been allocated to the sector, in order to enable a strong commitment to ensuring accessible and quality education.

“The government of Abia state remains deeply committed to the advancement of education as a driver of sustainable development. If you follow the government well you will notice that they allocated twenty percent of the annual budget of seven hundred billion naira to the education sector that shows how Abia state government is committed to ensuring that our children have quality education”, he said.
