The Niger Delta Ethnic Nationality Youth Leaders Forum (NDENYLF) has called on Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to facilitate the implementation of the University of Maritime Studies, Oron (UMSO) and intervene in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
President of the Oro Youth Movement (OYOM), Comrade Edet Eyo, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, following a courtesy visit by NDENYLF leaders to Akpabio in Abuja last Friday. The delegation was led by NDENYLF Chairman, Comrade Jonathan Lokpobiri.
Comrade Eyo noted that the Forum had earlier submitted a petition regarding the UMSO matter and reiterated the need for immediate action. He highlighted other critical issues discussed during the meeting, including the commencement of work on the coastal road section of the Niger Delta.
“The meeting was convened to address pressing concerns in the region, including the ongoing crisis in Rivers State and the delay in implementing the University of Maritime Studies, Oron (UMSO) Establishment Act, 2022,” Eyo stated.
The NDENYLF Chairman urged the Senate President to:
Expedite the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor for UMSO.
Constitute a proper Governing Council for the university.
Intervene in other critical challenges affecting the Niger Delta region.
Eyo emphasized that the meeting demonstrated NDENYLF’s dedication to advocating for the rights and interests of the Niger Delta people, adding:
“We are grateful for the Senate President’s willingness to listen and address our concerns.”
He also commended Akpabio for assuring the Forum that he would hold an urgent meeting with the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy to fast-track the implementation of the UMSO Establishment Act, 2022.
The OYOM president further appreciated NDENYLF Chairman, Comrade Lokpobiri, for successfully leading the discussions and reaffirmed the youth leaders’ commitment to ensuring development and prosperity in the Niger Delta.
“As youth leaders, we recognize the importance of collaboration and dialogue in driving positive change. We look forward to continuing our engagement with the Senate President and other stakeholders to secure a brighter future for our people.”
