The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a pro-democracy and civil rights advocacy group, has praised Governor Siminialayi Fubara of Rivers State for demonstrating his commitment to democracy and peace by inviting pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers to a meeting.
In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko emphasised that the gesture reflects the Governor’s dedication to promoting peace and unity in the state.
HURIWA called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Hon. Martins Amaaewhule, to embrace the Governor’s peace overtures.
The group reminded them that no one benefits from political instability, and that the citizens of Rivers State are entitled to good governance, which can only be achieved in an environment of peace, stability, and security.
HURIWA’s statement follows Governor Fubara’s decision to invite the Rivers State House of Assembly to a meeting. The invitation, delivered through a letter dated March 7, 2025, and signed by Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the State Government, was addressed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Amaaewhule.
The letter outlined the meeting’s agenda, including discussions on the provision of adequate facilities for the Assembly’s sittings, payment of outstanding allowances for lawmakers, the presentation of the state budget, and other matters to move the state forward.
HURIWA commended Governor Fubara for honouring his promise to make a final decision following the Supreme Court judgment.
The rights group noted that the Governor’s actions reflect a spirit of transparency, magnanimity, and respect for the rule of law.
By taking proactive steps to foster peace, security, and the progress of Rivers State, Governor Fubara has earned admiration from both HURIWA and other groups.
HURIWA also expressed hope that the lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike will respond in kind, demonstrating their commitment to the peace and security of the state.
The rights group emphasised that their actions, or lack thereof, will reveal whether they prioritise the welfare and progress of the people of Rivers State or not.
“We have reviewed the letter from Governor Fubara inviting the House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaaewhule, to a meeting following the recent Supreme Court ruling,” HURIWA stated.
“By inviting these lawmakers, who are known to be loyal to former Governor Wike, Governor Fubara has shown that he is a true democrat who upholds the rule of law and sees peace as essential for good governance.”
HURIWA urged all parties, especially the pro-Wike faction in the House of Assembly, to cooperate with the Governor in the best interest of the people of Rivers State, ensuring that the state avoids further political unrest
