The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has vowed to tackle the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in the Niger Delta region.
During a distribution event in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, represented by Ondo State Commissioner Hon. Otito Thompson Atikase, emphasized the commission’s commitment to social intervention and community development.
As part of the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration, themed “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” the commission distributed 300 assistive items, including wheelchairs, walking canes, crutches, Braille books, magnifying glasses, and hearing aids.
Dr. Ogbuku stated that the initiative aims to reduce social inequalities and enhance the economic and social participation of persons with disabilities.
“These devices will not only improve their mobility and communication but also enhance their economic and social participation. Everyone has a role to play in society, and no one should be marginalized,” he said.
He stressed the need to avoid attaching negative psychological implications to physical challenges, noting that persons with disabilities often contribute positively to society.
The Acting State Director of NDDC, Asonye Victor, assured that the initiative would be sustained to reach more beneficiaries.
“This is not a one-time event; it will continue periodically to ensure ongoing support for persons with disabilities,” he said.
The President of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Ondo State Chapter, Abiodun Samuel Olusegun, expressed gratitude to the NDDC while calling for additional support, including employment opportunities, vocational training centers, health insurance, scholarships, and accessibility improvements in tertiary institutions.
Project Manager of Tamzats Services Ltd, Victor Akene, highlighted the importance of the assistive devices.
“These items are meant to enhance the independence and mobility of individuals with disabilities, empowering them to lead better lives,” Akene stated.
The NDDC reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting persons with disabilities through continuous mobility aid distribution, educational support, and community-focused initiatives.
