Kebbi State is making significant strides in the world of sports, with a particular focus on the growing popularity of badminton with the inauguration of N48m hall.

Speaking to Vanguard, State Commissioner of Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, said   once viewed as a sport primarily for the elite, badminton has now captured the attention and enthusiasm of Kebbi’s younger generation.

He said “It is quickly becoming a sport that transcends age, providing a platform for people of all backgrounds to come together, interact, and forge lasting connections. Despite the sport’s rise in popularity, the lack of a dedicated indoor facility has long been a hindrance for badminton players in Kebbi.  Badminton, like many indoor sports, requires a controlled environment to ensure the best possible playing conditions.

“This absence of suitable venues has been felt across all local government areas in the state, even though badminton enthusiasts have remained undeterred by these limitations. The sport’s history in Kebbi can be traced back to the 1980s, when the Fatauchi family from the Zuru Emirate gained national and international acclaim for their skills, further boosting the sport’s local reputation.

“For years, the state’s badminton players have faced significant challenges in mastering the game due to the absence of a dedicated indoor venue. Since the creation of Kebbi State in 1991, no previous administration had prioritized such a facility—until now.

“Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, who assumed office in 2023, has made his mark with his fervent love for sports. As a badminton enthusiast himself, Dr. Idris has shown an unwavering commitment to improving the state’s sports infrastructure. Without hesitation, he championed the construction of Kebbi’s first indoor badminton hall, addressing the pressing needs of both young athletes aspiring to compete at national and local levels, as well as veteran players striving to stay fit and active.

“The state-of-the-art facility, which cost a total of N48 million, represents a forward-thinking investment in Kebbi’s growing sports community. This indoor badminton hall is expected to play a crucial role in nurturing young talent, improving the overall sports culture, and attracting local and national competitions. With this landmark achievement, Kebbi is now positioned to host a variety of events for players of all ages, solidifying its reputation as a rising force in the Nigerian sports landscape.”
