Petrol scoopers burnt beyond recognition, as tanker explosion rocks Niger

Death toll in Niger petrol tanker explosion now 70

A petrol tanker exploded into flames today, in Niger State, leaving many many dead and others injured. Eyewitnesses said the victims are over 100.

According to Channels TV,  the incident occurred at Dikko Junction, Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

They reported many were burnt to death beyond recognition.

The petrol-ladened tanker exploded when some residents of the area went to scoop its content after an accident.

Scores were said to have been burnt to death, while several others sustained various degrees of burnt.

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has expressed shock over the tragedy.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Bologi Ibrahim, said the governor described the explosion as “worrisome, heartbreaking and unfortunate”.

He sympathised with the victims’ families and prayed that “Allah will repose the souls of the departed and heal the injured”.

Also, he directed all the relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs, to do what is necessary, and urged security agents to take charge of the area.

Meanwhile, Governor Bago cautioned the people to give priority to their safety.
