Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault on journalists by an official of the Department of State Services (DSS) during Monday’s proceedings at the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal in Benin City.

This directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Festus Alenkhe and Andy Egbon, the chairman and secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, respectively.

The NUJ commended Okpebholo for his immediate response to the reported incident, praising his commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of media practitioners in the state.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his prompt intervention, which has sent a strong message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo State,” the statement read.

The NUJ emphasised that the governor’s directive for the security agency to investigate the allegations demonstrates his dedication to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.

The NUJ urged stakeholders to collaborate with the governor in fostering a culture of respect for journalists and their fundamental rights. The union also reiterated its support for Okpebholo’s administration, particularly in promoting a safe and enabling environment for media professionals.

“As the governor continues to demonstrate his commitment to protecting the rights of journalists, the NUJ has pledged its support for his administration’s efforts to promote a safe and enabling environment for media practice in Edo State.

“The governor has since directed the security agency to investigate claims by the NUJ accordingly,” the statement added.
