…donates ₦174m to Mashegu blast victims

Minna — Governor Muhammed Umar Bago of Niger State has directed individuals involved in illegal mining, particularly in Mashegu Local Government Area, to immediately surrender explosives and dangerous weapons to the government. This directive aims to prevent future tragedies.

The governor announced the decision during a visit to the scene of a recent dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu, which caused widespread destruction. To provide relief, he donated ₦174 million to the victims.

₦5 million each for victims whose homes were completely destroyed.

₦2 million for those with partially damaged homes.

₦1 million for the injured.

₦2 million for families of the deceased.

₦1 million for those whose vehicles were affected.

Governor Bago stated that a committee would be set up to ensure the equitable distribution of the funds.

He urged miners to hand over explosives and firearms to a committee comprising security agencies, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), traditional institutions, and other stakeholders for safe storage.

“The state is aware of the rich gold and lithium deposits in the area, which has attracted artisanal mining activities. Unfortunately, this has led to insecurity, as many miners possess explosives and firearms,” Bago explained.

He called on the community to embrace the state’s responsible mining policy to safeguard lives and property.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who accompanied the governor, conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s deep sadness over the incident. He described it as a “man-made tragedy” and stressed that such incidents must not recur.

Idris revealed that the president had ordered intensified advocacy and enlightenment campaigns by the National Orientation Agency to curb illegal mining activities.

The governor was joined by Senator Abubakar Sani Bello, Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly AbdulMalik Sarkin Daji, federal and state lawmakers, APC stalwarts, and the Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani Dantoro Kitoro IV, among other dignitaries.

Governor Bago reiterated the state’s commitment to working with federal authorities to prevent future disasters and ensure the safety of residents.
