National Library: Coalition slams critics, hails Anunobi’s leadership

By Luminous Jannamike

ABUJA The Coalition of Editors and Media Executives has condemned recent publications targeting Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, the National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria.

In a statement issued yesterday, signed by Coordinator Abdulazeez Dirisu, the group described the allegations as baseless attempts to tarnish Prof. Anunobi’s reputation.

The coalition criticized the publications for lacking balanced reporting and understanding of budget administration, accusing them of blackmail.

They emphasized that budget expenses include essential items such as staff allowances for workshops, stationery for budget documents, and committee sitting allowances, which are standard practices in government agencies.

Highlighting Prof. Anunobi’s achievements, the group noted initiatives like the Annual Readership Promotion Campaign (RPC), aimed at fostering a reading culture across Nigeria, and the development of a virtual library.

They also mentioned citizen engagement programmes conducted in various geopolitical zones, aligning with directives from the President to gather public input.

The coalition urged the public to disregard the misleading narratives and support Prof. Anunobi’s efforts to modernize the National Library, advocating for an end to defamatory campaigns against her.
