Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has dismissed concerns that investments by companies owned by Elon Musk could pose a threat to Italy, emphasising that decisions are made with the nation’s interests in mind.

“I work to have major investments in Italy and evaluate the usefulness of each investment through the prism of our national interest,” Meloni told Corriere della Sera in response to questions about potential national security risks.

The relationship between Meloni and Musk, the world’s richest man, has drawn much attention in Italy.

Musk presented an award to the Italian premier during a New York ceremony, a moment that underscored their connection.

Musk’s involvement in Italy’s political and economic landscape has also been notable.

He has openly commented on various issues, including urging Italy to address its declining birthrate and accusing Telecom Italia SpA of impeding Starlink Inc.’s high-speed internet rollout.

The two leaders have discussed potential collaborations in cutting-edge fields like space exploration and artificial intelligence.

Italy’s new regulatory framework now permits foreign space companies to operate within its borders, paving the way for Musk’s ventures.

During the September award ceremony, Musk praised Meloni as “authentic, honest, truthful — and that can’t always be said about politicians.” The admiration appears mutual, with Meloni describing Musk as “like a genius” who has been unfairly maligned for his political stance.

However, not all European leaders share the same enthusiasm for Musk. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his deputy, Robert Habeck, used their New Year speeches to criticize Musk’s support for a far-right party in February’s snap election.

Meanwhile, Musk’s influence extends beyond Europe. As a key figure in President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team, he is set to hold a prominent advisory role in the incoming U.S. government.
