Popular On-Air-Personality, Oladotun Kayode, aka Do2dtun, has raised concerns over the dwindling longevity of contemporary music, attributing the trend to an oversaturated market driven by haste and a fixation on streaming numbers.
“Most songs made in the last five years lack staying power. It’s not because they aren’t good enough, but the market is oversaturated with tracks made in haste,” Do2dtun remarked.
“It’s become a race to be heard – a numbers game rather than a focus on value.”
Do2dtun, known for his candid views on Nigeria’s entertainment scene, noted that the industry’s rapid growth has led to compromised artistry. He pointed to several factors contributing to this decline, including lazier artistes, reduced lyrical depth, a focus on quantity over quality, and songs that fail to inspire lasting memories.
The Nigerian music industry, which has gained international recognition with global stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido, has witnessed a surge in releases as streaming platforms dominate distribution.
However, Dotun warned that the current trend risks flooding the market with disposable music that won’t stand the test of time.
He urged stakeholders to prioritize substance over numbers to preserve the rich heritage of Nigerian music.
