The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has held a strategic meeting with the National Vice Chairman (South East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, to address governance, security, and developmental challenges in the South East region.

The discussion focused on the performances of the APC-led administrations in Ebonyi and Imo states, with an emphasis on tackling corruption and improving security.

During the meeting, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, commended Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru for his decisive action against corruption. Onwubiko highlighted the governor’s recent intervention in halting the theft of government property, including critical hospital supplies, from a warehouse in Abakaliki.

“It is rare to see a governor physically intervening to stop the looting of government resources,” Onwubiko stated. “This act of vigilance sets a high standard for public officials. We urge the government to ensure that those arrested are thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.”

Turning to Imo State, HURIWA lauded Governor Hope Uzodimma’s efforts in rehabilitating critical infrastructure, particularly the reconstruction of the Owerri-Orlu and Owerri-Okigwe roads, previously among the worst federal highways in Nigeria.

“These projects, reportedly funded by the Imo State government, have significantly improved transportation and economic activities in the state,” Onwubiko noted.

However, the association expressed deep concern over the persistent insecurity in Imo State and the South East, which has led to widespread human rights violations and instability. HURIWA acknowledged Governor Uzodimma’s recent initiative to encourage armed non-state actors to surrender their weapons in exchange for pardon and rehabilitation but stressed the need for a legal framework to solidify the program.

“We urge the Imo State government to work with the State House of Assembly to pass legislation that provides a robust legal framework for engaging with armed groups,” HURIWA stated. “This will not only legitimize the initiative but also ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.”

The group emphasized the urgency of restoring peace in the South East, given the region’s strategic importance and the devastating effects of ongoing violence. HURIWA called for collaboration among political leaders, security agencies, and local communities to address the root causes of insecurity and rebuild trust.

In response, Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu assured HURIWA of his commitment to conveying their concerns and recommendations to the governors of Ebonyi and Imo states. He reaffirmed the APC’s dedication to restoring peace and security in the region.

“The APC remains committed to ensuring governance translates into tangible benefits for the people,” Arodiogbu stated. “We are confident in the ability of APC-led administrations to address the region’s challenges.”

HURIWA concluded the meeting by reaffirming its commitment to advocating for human rights, good governance, and sustainable development in the South East and across Nigeria. The association urged the federal government and all stakeholders to intensify efforts to restore security and stability in the region.
