Net migration measures how many people enter some countries (immigrants) and how many leave (emigrants).

This calculation includes both citizens and non-citizens and typically covers one year.

International migration has grown significantly over time. In 2020, 281 million people migrated worldwide, representing 3.6% of the global population. This figure shows an increase of 128 million migrants since 1990 and more than three times the total in 1970.

People migrate for various reasons, such as pursuing personal goals or facing life challenges. However, wealthier countries attract more migrants. In 2020, Europe hosted 86.7 million migrants, while Asia followed closely with 85.6 million. The United States recorded the highest number of international migrants globally, with nearly 51 million. The Latin America and Caribbean region also experienced rapid growth in its migrant population, which nearly doubled since 2005.

Using data from the World Bank, which tracks net migration figures for countries from 1960 to 2022, here are five countries with the highest net migration based on their net migration figures for 2022.

5. Slovakia
Net Migration: 425,001

Slovakia attracts many immigrants due to its high quality of life. The country has a moderate climate, which adds to its appeal. However, it ranks 85th on the safety index, which may be a concern. Despite this, 78.3% of foreign-born residents have jobs, showing strong employment opportunities.

4. Hungary
Net Migration: 616,038

Hungary is a popular choice for immigrants in Europe. It ranks 44th globally for quality of life, attracting many people, especially from developing countries. Although Hungary ranks 90th on the safety index, its mild climate and high employment rate of 80.6% for foreign-born individuals make it attractive. The net migration rate is 2.6 migrants per 1,000 people.

3. Romania
Net Migration: 916,813

Romania offers a good quality of life and ranks 51st on the safety index, making it a welcoming place for immigrants. Its moderate climate makes living conditions comfortable for newcomers.

2. Russia
Net Migration: 942,445

Russia attracts immigrants despite ranking 66th for quality of life. The country faces challenges with low safety and harsh climate conditions. Even so, it has a net migration rate of 0.8 migrants per 1,000 people.

1. United States
Net Migration: 998,540

The United States is the top destination for immigrants. It ranks 15th for quality of life, offering good living conditions. Its moderate climate and a safety rank of 71 add to its appeal. With a foreign-born employment rate of 72.6%, the U.S. provides strong job opportunities. The net migration rate is 3 migrants per 1,000 people.
