The Minister of Handicrafts and Tourism, Mme Aghaichata Guichene ATTA, recently conducted series of visits to facilities under her ministry’s jurisdiction, aiming to assess their needs and provide tailored solutions.

Her tour included stops at the International Women’s Crafts Fair (SAFEM), the Gaweye Hotel, and the Niger Tourism Promotion Agency (APTN).

During these visits, she pledged to address the challenges identified and to support the growth of these critical sectors. “We will implement solutions to promote these sectors. I urge all Nigeriens to unite patriotically and embrace change to develop our nation, which is rich in untapped potential,” she stated.

At the headquarters of the International Women’s Crafts Fair (SAFEM), Aghaichata Guichene ATTA was welcomed by its Director, Mrs. Amadou Maïromeya. SAFEM focuses on empowering Nigerian women artisans by enhancing their skills. During the visit, several challenges were highlighted, including inadequate meeting spaces, inaccessible roads, technical and financial constraints, and issues related to the upcoming 13th edition of SAFEM, scheduled for December 1–10.

Inspection of Gaweye Hotel Renovation

The next stop was the iconic Gaweye Hotel in Niamey, where the Minister met developers, architects, and engineers overseeing the establishment’s renovation. Originally built in 1979, the hotel was once Niger’s largest and most prestigious. A 3D projection of the renovation plans was presented, showcasing the modernized vision for the hotel, designed to offer premium services.

Despite significant progress, challenges impeding the renovation were noted, including environmental, economic, technical, and social considerations, as well as issues related to staff entry visas, land titles, and property boundaries. The Minister and her delegation proposed solutions to expedite the reconstruction process.

The final stop was the Niger Tourism Promotion Agency (APTN), where the Minister was greeted by its Director General, Mr. Anafi Souleymane. She toured the agency’s premises, learned about its history, and reviewed progress on the construction of the training centre for tourism and hospitality professionals. The Director General cited difficulties in securing financing and credit, which have delayed the project.

Concluding her visit, Aghaichata Guichene ATTA Atta reaffirmed her commitment to addressing the pressing concerns identified during the tour. She emphasized her dedication to providing timely and effective solutions to ensure the development of the handicrafts and tourism sectors in Niger.
