Amid wild jubilation, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, announced the approval of the Ikotun-Roundabout Overhead Bridge construction, aimed at eliminating the perennial traffic gridlock in the axis.
Sanwo-Olu also announced plans to commission other iconic projects, such as connecting roads and bridges in Ikeja, Badagry, and Lagos Island, among others, aimed at easing and enhancing traffic movement in the state.
The state governor made the remarks at the inauguration of Babafemi Dada Link Road and Bridge, as well as Yinka Folarin, Jamiu Lawal, and Shalom Academy Road Network, in Alimosho Local Government Area.
The event was attended by Senator Representing Lagos East District, Dr. Idiat Adegbule, and former Deputy Governor of the state, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly, Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Desmond Elliot; members of the state Executive Council; royal fathers in the communities; chieftains of the All Progressives Congress; politicians; representatives of the Community Development Association, CDAs; traders; among others.
Recall that Sanwo-Olu had similarly, last week, commissioned Abiola Onijemo Link Road with Bridge, at Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, aimed to improve the quality of lives of residents.
According to him, “In reference to our royal fathers’ request for the construction of a flyover in Ikotun, I’m glad to announce that the project is already underway. It has received consideration. We have done the Bill of Quantity, BOQ. I can assure you that the flyover will be constructed in due course.
“And when it’s done, we need your assurances to own it and keep traders away from obstructing traffic in order not to defeat the essence of the facility in the axis. It will be another promise made and promise kept.”
Sanwo-Olu stressed that “Responsive governance is defined by the ability to turn promises into tangible actions. Our administration is committed to fostering sustainable development through the continuous provision of efficient infrastructure, and this commitment has remained unwavering.
“It gladdens my heart that we have successfully completed the reconstruction of the Babafemi Dada link road and bridge. This critical infrastructure project, delivered on schedule, reflects our dedication to improving the lives of Lagosians through purposeful governance.
“This achievement underscores our administration’s resolve to back our words with action. For the good people of Alimosho, this is not just a road and bridge; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to building infrastructure that serves both immediate needs and long-term growth.
“Before this intervention, connecting the Igando and Ayobo communities was a major challenge. Residents relied on a precarious wooden bridge—built by a private individual—which posed safety risks and required exorbitant fees. The alternative was an inefficient detour of at least 10 kilometres, which was neither practical nor in line with our goals for connectivity and inclusiveness.
“Recognising the importance of connecting these communities, we embarked on constructing a reinforced concrete bridge and approach roads across the swamp belt. This infrastructure provides safe and efficient access while opening the axis for economic development, linking LASU-IBA and Condos roads. This project aligns with the state’s Strategic Transportation Master Plan, ensuring inclusiveness, accessibility, and sustainability.
“With its completion, we have improved the drainage network, addressed perennial flooding, and created jobs for over 342 individuals directly while generating opportunities for numerous others indirectly. Professionals, including engineers, quality assurance experts, suppliers, administrative staff, artisans, and unskilled labourers, have all benefitted from this initiative.
“This infrastructure supports our broader vision of stimulating local economies and creating a framework for sustained growth. By reducing commute times and costs, the bridge and road network will enhance the quality of life for residents and promote productivity.
“The project represents a significant leap forward in improving transportation, fostering economic activity, and ensuring the equitable distribution of infrastructure.”
Sanwo-Olu, therefore, urged residents to take pride in this achievement, charging the CDAs to commit to its maintenance and responsible use. “I want you to see this project as your own because you are the direct beneficiaries of its dividends.”
Also, Special Adviser, Office of Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola said the commissioning was a remarkable development as another milestone in Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s commitment to infrastructure development that enhances the socio-economic well-being of the citizens.
“Before the intervention of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Administration, the previous infrastructure at this location was a wooden bridge, which residents and motorists paid a toll fee to move from Ayobo to Igando despite the high risk and long travel time.
“Recognising the importance of reliable and sustainable infrastructure, this administration has taken deliberate steps to replace such outdated structures with modern, durable alternatives that prioritise safety and functionality.
“This commitment to upgrading critical infrastructure reflects a broader vision to link communities, foster social interaction, and stimulate commerce. For instance, last week, the Abiola-Onijemo Bridge, once a wooden structure, was replaced with a modern concrete bridge exemplifying the state’s drive for safer and more resilient infrastructure.
“Additionally, a similar transformative project in which another wooden bridge at Ile-eja/Rabiatu Ogedengbe is being replaced with a concrete bridge structure, which, upon completion, will link Abaranje Okerube Road to LASU-Iba Road.
“Together, these efforts highlight the government’s dedication through its THEMES+t Agenda, addressing critical infrastructure needs by providing structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing alternatives that meet the demands of the Lagos of our dreams.
“The commissioned facilities comprise a bridge and a network of four roads with a total length of 3-8 kilometres, including a 250-meter-long deck on the pile with a 9-meter-wide rigid pavement finish. The infrastructure is further enhanced by the installation of solar-powered streetlights. This significant improvement provides safe and accessible motorable routes for the Igando-Ayobo community and surrounding settlements.
“With the successful completion of this road network, we have improved connectivity and also alleviated traffic congestion, fostering economic growth and development in the axis.”
