ABUJA — THERE appears to be division among civil society organisations, as the Coalition of Civil Society Groups (CCSG) has dissociated itself from the alleged ongoing protests and media engagements being conducted by various groups operating under the guise of civil society.
CCSG in a statement signed by its President, Oladimeji Olakunle Olatunji, emphasised its commitment to structured, lawful, and constructive advocacy.
The coalition noted that its attention has been drawn to activities by individuals and organisations purporting to represent civil society through protests, agitations, and confrontational media tactics.
CCSG described these actions as uncoordinated and inconsistent with its principles, urging the public and government institutions not to confuse such activities with its mandate.
According to the statement, “We wish to categorically state that the CCSG is a registered entity with a clear mandate, structure, and commitment to addressing critical national issues through constructive dialogue, research, and strategic advocacy.”
While reaffirming the constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, the coalition underlined the importance of adhering to lawful and constructive methods of engagement.
It warned against conflating its well-structured efforts with unregulated protests or gatherings, which it said did not align with its objectives.
“As a coalition, CCSG remains committed to pursuing meaningful engagement with relevant stakeholders and ensuring our advocacy promotes positive development, unity, and national progress,” it added.
The CCSG called on the public, government agencies, and the media to verify claims attributed to civil society groups to avoid confusion.
It reiterated its mission of serving as a credible and accountable voice for citizens while upholding the integrity of civil society organizations.
The statement also reaffirmed CCSG’s resolve to advance national development through strategic and lawful engagement, distancing itself from groups engaging in protests or confrontational activities.
The CCSG stressed that its approach would remain rooted in professionalism and accountability, emphasizing its role in fostering dialogue and unity across Nigeria.
