The President and Chairman of Council of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria ANAN, Dr James Neminebor, has asked members to always promote transparency in all their professional engagements.
Neminebor said this at the opening ceremony of the 6th session of Mandatory Continuing Professional Development MCPD programme,held in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The workshop’s theme is” Sustainable Accounting and Economic Social and Governance ESG Reporting.
The President said that ” as professionals in the accounting field, we have a vital role to play in promoting sustainability and responsible business practices.
“The world is facing unprecedented challenges in the shape of climate change, social inequality, and environmental degradation.
Neminebor added that ” the accounting profession must respond to these challenges by embracing sustainable accounting practices and Environmental, Social, Governance ESG reporting.
“As accountants, we must continually develop expertise in sustainable accounting and ESG reporting, advocate for policy and regulatory support, provide guidance to clients and organizations, embed sustainability into financial reporting and promote transparency in all our professional engagements.
“Sustainable accounting and ESG reporting are no longer optional; they are essential for business success and societal well-being.
“As accountants, we must lead the charge towards a more sustainable future and together, we can create a better future for Nigeria and the world.
The Chief Executive Officer of ANAN, Dr Kayode Fasua, said that the workshop, underscores the importance of staying abreast of the evol ing trends and standards in the field of accounting.
Fasua urged participants to ensure to utilise the knowledge and insights gained from the workshop to strive for excellence in their professional endeavors.
He said that ” together, we can achieve greater heights and make a lasting impact on the accounting profession in Nigeria and beyond.
In his address, the state chairman of the association, Ojo Ayo dele Francis, said that the theme is ” apt and timely, at the end of the session knotty issues affecting our economic and social life shall be trashed and solutions proffered.
Ojo noted that the association Branch in the state, has undergone transformative growth and unwavering commitments to development of the members.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by his Education Commissioner, Laolu Akindolire, eulogised ANAN “for playing a very significant role in the uplifting of the Accountancy profession in the last four decades through investment in capacity building to advance the profession in the country.
Aiyedatiwa added that “It is also gratifying to note that towards advancing the science of accountancy, ANAN is running an approved college and university.
” It is also equipping accounting research centres in seven universities, accounting laboratories in 15 universities and Polytechnics, providing books and computers to more than 25 tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
“In addition, ANAN’s notable achievements in defining accountancy standards and practices, teaching and examining students, regular hosting of MCPD’s and conferences, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the African Professionalisation Initiative (API) to professionals Public Sector Accountants in Nigeria are worthy of commendations.
Aiyedatiwa asked members to adhere to noble ideals of the profession which are defined by integrity, transparency and accountability adding that these should be pursued at all times.
