Yawe tasks educators to explore AI in empowering graduates as global citizens

A Professor of General, Breast and Endocrine Surgery, King-David Terna Yawe, has call on educators to explore Artificial Intelligence, AI,  in empowering graduates as global citizens for a sustainable future.

He also said educators must embrace innovative teaching methodologies, think critically, think creatively, breakdown silos between disciplines, foster intercultural dialogue, and inspire students to become active global citizens.

On the other hand,he tasked students to seize opportunities to learn about different cultures, engage in community service, and develop leadership skills.

Yawe,who is a consultant surgical oncologist at the University Abuja, said these were necessary, given the rapid advancement of computer applications including AI technologies that have impacted various sectors, including education.

His position was contained in a paper, titled:”

“Empowering Graduates as Global Citizens for  a Sustainable Future “,which he presented as a guest lecturer at the 5th Combined Convocation Lecture of Bingham University, yesterday.

” The choice of AI platform should align with the specific educational objectives of empowering graduates as global citizens for sustainable future, “he advised.

Prof. Yawe, who described global citizenship education as a vital framework for fostering understanding, empathy, and active participation in an interconnected world, however noted that its implementation must be sensitive to the cultural and socio-economic contexts of learners.

The medical expert  said by recognizing these differences, educators can create more effective and meaningful global citizens education initiatives that  empower all students to contribute to a just and sustainable world.

Describing global citizenship education as essential framework for equipping individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values to engage with the world constructively and empathetically, Prof. Yawe noted that central to  global citizenship education is the recognition of gender equality and diversity as vital components for fostering inclusive societies.

He noted that to fully realize the potential of global citizenship education, “a concerted effort is required from all stakeholders. “

According to him, institutions must prioritize global citizenship in their mission and vision, invest in curriculum development, faculty training, and student support.

He said:”In an increasingly interconnected and complex world, the role of global citizens has never been more critical. By cultivating a global mindset, critical thinking, and a commitment to social justice, graduates are equipped to address current and emerging pressing global challenges and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

“To fully realize the potential of global citizenship education, a concerted effort is required from all stakeholders. Institutions must prioritize global citizenship in their mission and vision, investing in curriculum development, faculty training, and student support.

“Educators must embrace innovative teaching methodologies, think critically, think creatively, breakdown silos between disciplines, foster intercultural dialogue, and inspire students to become active global citizens. Students must seize opportunities to learn about different cultures, engage in community service, and develop leadership skills. “

Continuing, Prof. Yawe said, “A world where graduates are empowered as global citizens is a world characterized by peace, justice, and sustainability. (It is a world where individuals are interconnected, empathetic, and committed to creating a better future for all.

“By fostering a generation of global citizens, we can build a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous world for generations to come, “he told added.

The medical expert while speaking further,noted that,” The journey towards empowering graduates as global citizens is ongoing.

“By working collaboratively and with determination, we can create a world where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a sustainable future, ” he said.
