Uniabuja SSANU breaks up as 70 withdraws membership

Crisis is rocking the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Abuja chapter as no fewer than 70 members have resigned their membership of the union.

The 70 members who resigned their membership have also demanded immediate halt to check-off deductions.

The aggrieved members jointly led by Barr Abdulaleem Haruna  and Barr Okpe Alleh have directed the University Bursar to stop all deductions of their check-off dues with immediate effect.

The staffers attributed poor leadership, lack of accountability, and transparency by the executive committee as basis for their actions.

The resigning members, which include Deputy Registrars, passed a vote of no confidence the executives.

They accuse the leadership of the union of multiple infractions and actions deemed anti-union, including subverting the will of the congress and failing to promote inclusiveness in union activities.

According to the members, these actions have led to disillusionment and a sense of disenfranchisement within the union.

One of the protesting members, Architect Khadijat Umar  stated, “The SSANU leadership at UniAbuja, , cannot make meaningful progress due to his high-handedness and disregard for constitutional norms. We are taking this step to stand for accountability and the principles of a true union.”

There are indications that more SSANU members of the institution would also resign their membership of the union in protest to the way and manner the union has been ran since February 2023 when the current executives were elected.
