President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday urged the newly inaugurated Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to work diligently to improve the living standards of the people of Edo State and to make a significant impact during his tenure.

President Tinubu also extended his heartfelt congratulations to Senator Okpebholo on his inauguration as the Governor of the State.

The President’s advice and congratulatory message were contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The statement said, “In his message, President Tinubu urged Governor Okpebholo to work diligently to enhance the living standards of the people of Edo State and to make a significant impact during his tenure.”

Following his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024, Okpebholo officially succeeded former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Reflecting on the transition, President Tinubu noted that, after eight years under Obaseki’s administration, Edo State is now rejoining the All Progressives Congress. He emphasized the importance of Governor Okpebholo justifying the confidence placed in him and in the APC while promoting true democracy and effective governance in the state.

The statement continued, “The President encouraged Okpebholo to empower the Legislature and other key government institutions throughout his administration, stressing that a strong and independent legislature is vital for achieving democratic good governance.”

President Tinubu also expressed concern about the previous administration’s attempts to undermine the legislative branch, which had hindered its effectiveness for much of its tenure.

Additionally, the President commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for the successful conduct of the Edo Governorship Election and urged the Commission to strive for even greater excellence in the upcoming Ondo Governorship Election, scheduled for November 16, 2024.

The statement concluded, “The President celebrated this milestone as a new chapter in Edo State’s democratic journey and rejoiced with the people of Edo on this momentous occasion.”
