Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed commitment to the application of Artificial Intelligence, and AI-driven innovations in reshaping the renewable energy landscape.
He said the government has a significant role to play in streamlining downstream energy operations in order to increase output in the value chain while sustaining itself as a leader in energy reforms and sustainability.
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner, Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, said the future of renewable energy, innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity must be at the forefront and AI-driven innovations offer unprecedented opportunities to reshape the energy landscape, making it more efficient, reliable, and accessible.
In his keynote at the just-concluded 2024 Gennex Technologies Solar Colloquium in Lagos, with “Steering the Renewable Energy Future: Innovation, Sustainability, and Inclusive Growth,” as the theme, he said: “I’ll explore how AI-driven innovations are reshaping the renewable energy landscape and the strategies we must embrace to ensure inclusive growth in this rapidly evolving sector. The Transformative Role of AI in Renewable Energy: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the renewable energy sector, enhancing the efficiency, scalability, and sustainability of clean energy systems.
“AI can analyze vast amounts of data in real-time, improving energy forecasts, optimizing grid management, and balancing supply and demand. For instance, AI-driven algorithms help solar and wind farms predict weather patterns, adjusting output to meet real-time energy needs.
“AI allows the integration of decentralized energy systems like rooftop solar panels, enabling smart grids that can balance and distribute energy more effectively. This leads to reduced energy waste and lower costs for consumers. AI is revolutionizing predictive maintenance by detecting early signs of equipment failure in wind turbines or solar panels, minimizing downtime and reducing repair costs. This significantly boosts the longevity and reliability of renewable energy infrastructure. Strategies for Ensuring Inclusive Growth: As we harness AI to innovate, we must also prioritize inclusivity to ensure that the benefits of renewable energy reach all sectors of society.
“It’s essential to develop policies that support equitable access to clean energy technologies. This includes investing in energy infrastructure for rural and underserved communities, ensuring they are not left behind in the transition to renewables. Inclusive growth requires empowering local communities with the skills needed to participate in the renewable energy economy. By investing in education and training programs, we can develop a diverse workforce that contributes to the innovation and implementation of AI-driven renewable energy solutions.
“Gender and diversity inclusion are critical for building a resilient and innovative sector. Women, in particular, must be actively encouraged to take on leadership roles in science, engineering, and decision-making positions within the energy sector. Initiatives that promote STEM education for girls and women in energy innovation can accelerate progress.
Similarly, in her welcome address, Mrs Toyin Ilo, Executive Director of Gennex Technologies, said: “I am excited that we will be exploring the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in the renewable energy space. AI is revolutionizing how we approach energy generation, distribution, and storage, and is positioned to be a game-changer globally and right here in Nigeria.
“AI can unlock new efficiencies and drive down costs, helping us meets our energy goals faster and more effectively. Also important is the topic of sustainability and focusing on how we can make renewable energy more affordable and accessible through innovative financing mechanisms. For too long, access to clean energy has been hindered by financial barriers, especially for smaller enterprises and individuals. It is time to change that narrative by embracing new models of investment, partnerships, and policy frameworks.
“As we engage in these discussions today, I encourage everyone to think boldly, share openly, and collaborate passionately. The solutions to our most pressing challenges will not come from any single organization or individual but from our collective efforts. Let us leverage this unique gathering of minds and expertise to push the boundaries of what we can achieve together.”
