Reshaping Nigerian music with timeless soundscapes  – Finesse

By Juliet Ebirim

In the world of Nigerian music production, Dr. Finesse stands as a beacon of innovation, blending genres and pushing the boundaries of sound. Born Ifunanya Finesse Anaemena, the Nigerian music producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, sound engineer and video director started his music journey in 2007 as an artiste and transitioned to music production in 2009. Known for his unique, genre-blending style, Dr. Finesse merges elements of Afrobeats, Ogene, R&B, hip-hop and pop to create a distinct sound.

A prime example of this is Modenine’s 2016 track “Take My Hand.” Dr. Finesse’s production on this song is a masterclass in blending the old and the new. The grinding sonata loops, slow-burn chords, and Modenine’s guttural delivery create a timeless sound that is both nostalgic and futuristic.

One of the hallmarks of Finesse’s production is his ability to seamlessly blend genres. This is evident in his work with Charles Onyeabor, a fusionist and son of the legendary Funk Legend Williams Onyeabor. On tracks like “Low,” he crafts a mesmerizing soundscape that incorporates elements of 3-beat Afro Pop, Amapiano, House, and R&B. The result is a multi-layered, climaxing track that showcases his mastery of various musical styles.

Finesse’s intuitive approach to music production is another key factor in his success. He has a knack for identifying the perfect genre and sound for a particular artist or project. This is evident in his work with Cnik Ree and Skales on the lustful track “Turnaround,” where he employs a gong-ridden pop sound that perfectly complements the song’s mood.

Nostalgia is a key element in Finesse’s music, as he often draws inspiration from the rich musical heritage of Nigeria, particularly the pre-Independence era. His unique blend of nostalgia, intuition and tempo has made him a  pioneer in the world of Nigerian music production. This nostalgic influence can be heard in his work with artists like Modenine, where he infuses classic sounds with contemporary production techniques.

His recent collaborative project, Invasion, with the Creative Dynasty Academy, further showcases his versatility and innovation. This 13-member Christian gospel group provided the perfect platform for Dr. Finesse to explore a wide range of genres, including jazz, funk, highlife, R&B, and more. The result is a refreshing and inspiring album that defies genre boundaries.

Dr. Finesse’s impressive catalog includes collaborations with entertainment icons like Mr. Raw, Skales, Faze Alone, Mode Nine, Mr. M & Revelation, Testimony Jaga, Charles Onyeabor, Mr. Chichi, Nolly CIA, Nkiru Sylvanus, Sylvester Mmadu (Shina Rambo), and Kanayo O. Kanayo and many more.
