…Urges Tinubu to Convene Constitutional Conference
By Steve Oko
The Prelate of the Anglican Communion, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, has voiced his concern that Nigerians are not only hungry but also deeply disillusioned with their leadership.
In a powerful message during the funeral service of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, held at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Atta Ikeduru, Imo State, Ndukuba called for a constitutional conference to draft a more people-centered constitution.
Reflecting on the difficult times Nigerians face, he stated: “People are not only hungry but angry. There’s no reason for any Nigerian to be hungry. It’s disheartening that some leaders take palliatives only to hoard them.”
Ndukuba reminded those in power that true leadership requires accountability. He emphasized the importance of youth investment, noting that Nigerian youths are eager to compete globally if given the chance. He urged leaders to avoid wastefulness, especially as many Nigerians struggle to afford daily meals, lamenting that some religious leaders even flaunt wealth at a time of widespread hardship.
The Prelate further urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convene a constitutional conference, stating, “The best legacy Tinubu can give us is a constitution that Nigerians can truly call their own.”
Speaking on the theme, “Serving the Purpose of God in Our Generation,” Ndukuba described Iwuanyanwu as a courageous leader who had always advocated for the Igbo people. He encouraged Iwuanyanwu’s family to uphold his legacy by staying united and committed to his values.
Ndukuba also called on the government to address perceived injustices against the Igbo people, noting, “We can’t expect peace when there is injustice.” He urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo to seek a patriotic and fearless leader to continue Iwuanyanwu’s legacy, especially at a time when “Ndigbo are being treated as second-class citizens.”
The funeral service saw a gathering of prominent figures across Nigeria, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented President Tinubu; Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; APC National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje; former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara; Governors Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodinma, and Alex Otti; former military governor Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd); and former Imo State Governors Rochas Okorocha and Emeka Ihedioha.
Reflecting on Iwuanyanwu’s legacy, former Senate President Wabara called him a monumental asset to the Igbo people, expressing that his loss was deeply felt. Other dignitaries also paid tribute to his enduring contributions to Igbo causes and the many leaders he mentored throughout his life.
