The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission on Tuesday sealed a warehouse where bags of rice, part of the Federal Government’s palliative intended for vulnerable citizens, were being diverted.
The commission’s chairman, Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, led the operation to uncover the warehouse located along Hotoro Ring Road in Nassarawa Local Government Area. One storekeeper has been arrested, while efforts are underway to identify others involved in the diversion.
According to Rimingado, approximately 28 truckloads of rice, valued at an estimated N1.3 billion, were meant for distribution during the holy month of Ramadan but were instead diverted.
“This warehouse is not a rice mill; it was being used to repackage and rebag the palliative rice for transportation and sale in the market,” Rimingado explained.
He highlighted clear evidence of sabotage, stating: “We found bags of rice clearly labeled with the image of the President, marked ‘Ramadan Kareem,’ and inscribed with ‘Not for Sale.’ Despite this, the items were being rebagged and prepared for sale.
“This is a blatant form of corruption, particularly in the face of the current economic hardship. It’s shocking that someone would exploit government initiatives intended to alleviate public suffering.”
The commission also recovered a rebagging machine used for repacking the rice. Armed with search and arrest warrants, the team is intensifying its investigation to apprehend all parties involved and prevent similar acts in the future.
“For now, we have one suspect in custody. We will ensure a thorough investigation to expose everyone behind this scheme and deter such corrupt activities,” Rimingado assured.
The operation underscores the commission’s commitment to safeguarding public resources and ensuring accountability in government palliative programs.
