I was misunderstood on my position on subsidy removal – Sani Musa

…Seeks strong mitigations against subsidy removal

Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance (APC, Niger East), has clarified his stance on fuel subsidy removal following recent controversies.

He stated that his comments had been misunderstood, explaining that while he supports the removal, he emphasizes the need for robust measures to protect Nigerians from potential negative impacts.

Musa noted that, though he described subsidy removal as beneficial for Nigeria, he never intended to dismiss the economic challenges this change poses for citizens. Instead, he argues that the subsidy had long benefited only a select few, draining resources that could have funded critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

He outlined his support for mitigating measures, including increased social welfare investments, enhanced security, and economic growth initiatives across all levels.

In a personal statement issued on Sunday, Musa addressed the backlash following his Friday interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, where he stated, “Removing subsidy is the best thing that has happened to Nigeria.” He clarified that this was not to undermine the difficulties faced by Nigerians but to highlight the reduction of systemic corruption and redirection of funds to necessary areas.

Acknowledging the persistent insecurity issues in his senatorial district and elsewhere, Musa pledged to champion policies that ensure the well-being and security of all citizens. He expressed commitment to addressing public concerns and to advancing policies that prioritize safety, economic empowerment, and equitable development.
