Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, has appealed to the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, stressing that his continued detention is contributing to insecurity in the Southeast.
Igwe Asadu urged President Bola Tinubu to seek a political solution to Kanu’s case, expressing hope that his release would help stabilize the region.
Speaking during the 2024 New Yam Festival at Edem Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka, Igwe Asadu explained the festival’s significance as a time for thanksgiving for bountiful harvests, peace, and security. The monarch, who previously served as Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers’ Council, extended his gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for his support, including the provision of fertilizers for local farmers and establishing a smart school in the community.
“Iwa Ji is a key traditional practice that sustains our culture and reminds us of the importance of agriculture, particularly yam farming, as a staple food and a symbol of prosperity,” he said, encouraging citizens to invest in farming.
Enugu State’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Patrick Uburu, also expressed the government’s support for the New Yam Festival, emphasizing its role in promoting cultural heritage and boosting agricultural productivity. The state government, he noted, has identified and continued to support genuine farmers to ensure food security.
Chairman of the occasion, Chief Chidi Ezema, highlighted the festival as a celebration of life, culture, and community achievements, marking the second year of the revived festival under Igwe Asadu’s leadership. Planning Committee Chairman, Ozo Chukwuemeka Ejum, praised Igwe Asadu’s dedication to preserving Edem Ani Ogwugwu’s culture and traditions.
The event featured elaborate cultural displays, including masquerades, traditional yam barns, and other performances, celebrating the vibrant Igbo heritage.
