Popular singer, Wiz Ofuasia, also known as Wizboyy, has expressed his concern about the decline of lyrical quality in contemporary Nigerian music.
Known for his hit songs like Screen Saver, Wizboyy shared his thoughts during an interview, highlighting the lack of depth in many songs today.
Reflecting on the current trends, Wizboyy stated, “I’ve cried the most tears about this (laughs). Not every song has to be lyrically deep, and that’s okay. Some songs are just for the moment, fun, and vibes. But music is way more than that. It’s like a Swiss Army knife when it comes to affecting human emotions. It’s a tool for inspiring, educating, encouraging, and uplifting people.”
Wizboyy lamented that much of today’s music lacks substance, contributing to the short lifespan of popular songs. “Unfortunately, most songs today lack lyrical depth and substance. Little wonder the lifespan of songs now is three months on average. It’s sad,” he added.
The singer explained that his song Fly Away draws its inspiration from a deeper place, celebrating love and inner beauty. “Fly Away is a song that comes from a place of purity of thought, celebrating and reaffirming my belief in love, and appreciating a woman’s beauty in and out,” he said.
Wizboyy also touched on the ongoing feud between music giants Wizkid and Davido, calling it a distraction from the real work of elevating Nigerian music globally. He urged them to focus on collaboration rather than competition. “It doesn’t contribute to industry growth in any way. These guys have made us proud, and if anything, they should be collaborating to make Nigeria and Africa bigger,” he concluded.
