With the eagerly awaited finale of the NESG/AFAF National Art Competition unfolding on Sunday, October 13 at Abuja’s Transcorp Hilton Hotel, widespread excitement among art enthusiasts and contestants alike is evident.

This pioneering partnership between the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and Africa Art Fund (AFAF) has garnered an impressive 304 submissions from talented artists across the nation. Major cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Enugu have emerged as hotbeds of creative talent, with younger artists (18-24) accounting for 177 entries, nearly 60% of the total. This demographic’s overwhelming participation underscores the competition’s ability to inspire and empower Nigeria’s next generation of artists.

The competition’s theme, “Collaborative Action for Growth, Competitiveness, and Stability,” has struck a chord with Nigeria’s emerging art talent, yielding innovative works that reflect the country’s diverse cultural heritage. By exploring this theme, artists have delved into the complexities of Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape, offering unique perspectives on the nation’s growth and development.

Following a rigorous selection process, 30 exceptional finalists have been chosen to showcase their art in an exclusive exhibition, with the chance to win ₦6 million in prizes— translating to ₦3 million for the first prize, ₦2 million for the second, and ₦1 million for the third prize.

This prestigious platform will not only provide national recognition but also propel the winners to new heights in their artistic careers. AFAF’s comprehensive growth program will provide additional support, featuring a seven-week internship, workshops, mentorship, and networking opportunities. This holistic approach will equip the finalists with essential skills to navigate the art world, foster creative excellence, and contribute to Nigeria’s burgeoning art ecosystem.

Renowned artist Professor Bruce Onobrakpeya, a 2006 UNESCO Living Human Treasure, will meanwhile headline the event, discussing “Driving Social Change for Economic Growth through Art.” His Harmattan Workshop Series, a biannual platform for artistic collaboration and innovation, will also be discussed. Onobrakpeya’s presence underscores the competition’s commitment to excellence and its focus on empowering artists to drive social change.

This initiative champions creative excellence, economic growth, and art’s role in driving social change and cultural visibility. African Art Fund’s Ifesinachi Nwanyanwu emphasises the importance of nurturing younger artists’ creativity by learning from industry pioneers. “Cultivating younger artists’ creativity means learning from pioneers who have shaped the industry’s development and sustainability,” Nwanyanwu notes.
