The month of October has been set aside as ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’ to reflect on our mental well-being and acknowledge the challenges we face in maintaining it. It is also an avenue to encourage and educate the public to take their mental health very seriously.
This month encourages us to take a break from our daily activities, take care of our mental well-being, seek support, and breakdown the stigma that often surrounds mental health issues.
Having established the aforementioned, below are 5 tips for mental health well-being.
Exercise
Research has shown that exercise like jogging, walking, or yoga improves our blood flow, and releases endorphins, which will help trigger positive feelings in our body.
Exercise is a great way to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and it improves sleep and cognitive function.
Value Yourself
You are more important than whatever circumstances surround you. Hence, doing the things you love to do, such as dancing, singing, swimming, and other hobbies, helps boost your confidence.
Also, learn to say no whenever you are not comfortable with a situation, and limit exposure to negative news and social media contents.
Deal with Stress
Stress can easily trigger a negative mood, which is why you need to create a consistent daily routine and order, such as regular sleeping patterns, balanced meals, and exercise, to stabilize your mental health, which can reduce stress.
You can also try to watch funny contents or memes during your breaks, either at work or school, to boost your immune system, ease pain, relax your body, and reduce stress.
Connect with others
Building healthy relationships and maintaining social connections with your family and friends are also very important for maintaining mental health. These networks help build our self-confidence, give emotional support, reduce feelings of isolation, and, most importantly, make us feel that we are loved.
Practice Mindfulness
The practice of mindfulness can help you enjoy life and understand yourself better by engaging in activities that keep you present, like meditation or deep breathing exercises.
Similarly, you should pay more attention to the present moment and avoid what people say about you or your feelings, your body, and the world around you.
